Free activism workshops to help you build the skills to fight for and win change

Want to build your confidence and ability across a range of important activism skills? Interested in learning more about campaign strategy, facilitation, decolonisation, volunteer recruitment and wellbeing?

Making Waves is a free series of 90-min online workshops designed to equip young people (15-35 years old) with essential skills for campaigning, whether you’re showing up on the ground, organising online or speaking out in the media.

Why should you join?

Young people are already making waves calling for justice and system change across a whole number of issues. These workshops will give you the skills to plan and roll out effective campaigns that build real power sustainably. 

What to expect:

  • Sessions on essential campaigning and organising skills
  • Insights into how to decolonise your activism and incorporate wellbeing into your campaign.
  • Specialised sessions on digital campaigning, evaluation and reflection, protest planning and campaign messaging.
  • Opportunities to connect with other young people who are making a difference.

The sessions will be held online throughout the year, so you can join from anywhere. You can pick and choose which sessions to attend.

Intro to Campaigning – Tue 13 May

Get the basics for developing a campaign strategy and tactics, and ensuring your time and funds are spent as effectively as possible.

Decolonising Solidarity – Mon 19 May

Mon 19 May, 7–8:30pm AEST

Learn about the history of First Nations resistance and how your organisation and campaign can support current Blak rights struggles. This session is targeted at non-First Nations allies, but First Nations people are welcome to attend.

Community Organising – Tue 24 June

How do we build power for our campaigns? By organising! This session covers essential skills like volunteer recruitment and retention, and running great meetings and events.

Campaign Evaluation – Wed 25 June

Wed 25 June, 7–8:30pm AEST

Reflection, evaluation and knowledge retention processes will help make sure you’re learning from experience and adapting your campaign for maximum impact and longevity.

Digital Campaigning – Thu 24 July

Get the most out of your digital and social media presence, and learn how to use it to build your power.

Campaign Messaging – Thu 31 July

Crafting a great message and getting media coverage can give your campaign a huge boost. Learn how to shape your story ethically, with a focus on framing and audience.

The Making Waves workshops are open to young people (15-35yo) across Australia who are interested in gaining practical skills for positive change.

Who are the organisers and workshop facilitators?

These workshops are facilitated by experienced trainers from Foundation for Young Australians (FYA), plus a selection of topic experts.

What is the committment?

Each workshop runs for 90 minutes. You can attend one or multiple sessions – whichever workshops you are interested in!

Are these sessions recorded?

Sessions won’t be recorded to help maintain a safe and open space for participation, however any resources or materials used in the workshop will be shared afterwards.

Does it cost me anything?

What inclusion and accessibility support was provided?

We aim to make these sessions accessible to all. Please inform us of any specific accessibility requirements when registering. Auslan interpreting can be provided.
