About the Youth council

How did Hume Young Mayors start?

Hume Youth Services has a long history of supporting young people in their community to participate and be active contributors in a fast-growing Local Government Area (LGA). The Young Mayors program launched in the Hume area in 2025 in response to the Hume Council’s 2022-26 Plan for Young People, presenting an opportunity for the Young Mayors model to adapt to a different context after running in multiple regional LGAs.

Young Mayors in Hume kicked off with a consultation process led by Hume Youth Services with young people in their programs focussed on key questions related to the design of Young Mayors for their context. These consultation sessions informed the final design decisions in the implementation and were tailored to the needs of the community at the time.

In June 2025, we officially launched the program and began the nominations and campaigns process, followed by an election in October 2025. A total of 26 candidates participated in the elections, of which 12 were elected to form the Youth Council.
