YLab is a certified social enterprise placing young people at the centre of complex problems to design the future.
Imagined and launched by FYA in 2016, YLab is a consulting, learning and co-design agency that brings the fresh thinking of diverse young people to complex social challenges.
To deliver this work, YLab has recruited, trained and employed over 150 Associates aged between 18 – 30 across Australia. The YLab Associates bring multidisciplinary skills, future-focused ideas and different lived experiences, to work with clients and partners on challenges that require fresh approaches. You can meet the YLab team here.
YLab has worked with for-purpose organisations, corporate and government clients from a wide range of sectors to connect young people with clients to solve complex problems, change systems, and design the future.
YLab works on challenges related to:
Brimbank City Council has the highest rates (18.2%) of youth unemployment in Victoria and the 12th highest rate in Australia. YLab recruited and trained eight local young people from Brimbank City Council, who had a diversity of lived and professional experience to form the Youth Employment Task Force. The project focused on increasing the capacity of 9 local employers to be able to socially procure their goods and services as well as co-designing and embedding inclusive employment practices related to recruitment, retention, and training for local young people.
First Nations voices are rarely heard or acted upon within systems across Australia. Drawing on YLab’s proven model of co-design and engagement with young people, YLab were invited by the Wollotuka Institute at the University of Newcastle to create an embedded practice centred on young people leading, designing, and facilitating projects in the University context. YLab employed and trained six First Nations young people at Wollotuka who each received paid coaching and training as part of their involvement.
YLab partnered with Orygen and headspace to put young people at the centre of providing insights and recommendations for developing an effective regional engagement model for young people accessing mental health services in Melbourne’s West. YLab hired an Orygen Associate team of 15 diverse young people. They were trained and employed by YLab to deliver a pilot co-design project to provide insights into the current engagement models and approaches for young people accessing front-end services in Western Melbourne.
YLab offers a range of services, and seeks long-term collaborations to change systems and create a brighter future for young people.
