When people think of awards, they might imagine a long-winded ceremony — more of an opportunity to snooze in your seat than to get up and party — but here at FYA, we like to shake things up! So, we’ve got a stellar line-up of performances to accompany our announcements and awards.
We’re excited to reveal our keynote speaker for the night will be NASA Astronaut Jessica Meir straight from Houston, Texas. We’ll also have Melbourne’s own soulful Triple J Unearthed stars Kaiit and Alice Skye, as well as all-female group YOWO Music to keep you grooving through the night. Pulling it all together, our host and MC will be none other than funny man, Nath Valvo. And that’s just the entertainment! We’ll be announcing all of our award winners throughout the evening, so get ready to cheer and give a few rounds of applause.
We know you’re just as pumped as we are, so we’ve included all the details below. We also want to make sure everyone can make it, so head here for accessibility information.
This is an alcohol and drug free event.
All the way from the USA, we’ve got NASA astronaut (and aquanaut) Jessica Meir! Jessica has a Masters of Science in Space Studies and a Doctorate in Marine Biology, plus she’s been on space flights for NASA and even spent time living in an underwater habitat… Learn more.

We’re delighted to announce that YOWO Music will be here to keep us grooving all night long as the house band! YOWO is a contemporary music program and collective aimed at high school aged girls and gender non-conforming people interested in pursuing music… Learn more.
Unleashed will be returning to Fed Square again in 2017, and much like FYA, Deakin Edge at Fed Square is committed to ensuring accessibility to all of their events.
Deakin Edge has lift access and is wheelchair accessible.
Please note that there will be construction works on the Atrium lift at Fed Square until December 2017. Anyone who cannot use the stairs will need to use the accessible path via the Plaza and along Flinders Street to access the lower level of the Atrium, where you will find Deakin Edge.
Arrangements can also be made to enter from the Fed Square Car Park.
Accessible parking at Fed Square
Fed Square has its own multi-level car park, which is accessible from Russell Street or Batman Ave (via the Exhibition Street extension, City Link). The Fed Square Car Park is open 24hrs and has accessible spaces located next to the lift on each level.
Taxis and picking up / dropping off passengers
To access Deakin Edge, we recommend you organise pick up and drop off at the Russell St Extension, just behind Deakin Edge, Fed Square.
Hearing loops are provided throughout Deakin Edge.
This event will be Auslan interpreted.
Seeing eye dogs
Seeing eye dogs are welcome in both Fed Square and Deakin Edge.
There are accessible public toilets and baby-change facilities located in Fed Square next to Time Out, and in The Atrium next to Kirra Galleries.
