New Work Order in the VCAL

Why NWO in the VCAL?

The Foundation for Young Australians’ (FYA) New Work Order (NWO) report series shows that we’re facing the biggest disruption to the world of work since the industrial revolution.

The reports highlight that the disruption brings opportunity for young people but only if we invest to ensure they have the skills, capabilities and mindset to overcome the challenges of the future.

The BGKLLEN works closely with VCAL schools, who have indicated a need for a free learning resource for teachers to apply the NWO learnings in their classroom(s).

What is NWO in the VCAL?

NWO in the VCAL is a partnership between FYA and the Bayside Glen Eira Kingstong Local Learning Employment Network (BGKLLEN).

Developed through a co-design process with BGKLLEN partner schools and students, the toolkit is comprised of five learning modules and has all the information required for educators to read the reports and facilitate meaningful activities and conversations.

It has been designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge and agency to confidently navigate the future of work, both as job creators and job seekers.

How does it fit into the VCAL curriculum?

The toolkit is mapped to the VCAL curriculum (intermediate level) to ensure that the activities are embedded in classroom learning.

Appendix A of the toolkit has the full curriculum mapping and complete unit description.
The following key learning areas are covered:

  • Use ICT to complete a work-based activity
  • Work in a team
  • Interpreting data
  • Learn about selected workplace industry
  • Problem solving
  • Reading/writing for information
  • Build skills to enter workforce
  • CV writing
  • Job searching

Key Dates

The toolkit has been designed to provide a high level of flexibility so that you can tailor the program to fit your school context and time requirements.

  • Dec ’17 – June ’18: Available to download for free
  • Jan ’18 – Dec ’18: Implement in the classroom

Time Commitment

The toolkit has been designed to suit the time required to implement a standard VCAL unit.

Each module has overall time estimates (eg 3 hours) and each lesson also has approximate times for delivery (eg 60 minutes) to allow you to plan the delivery according to your context.
