Since 2015 the $20 Boss program has been supporting educators to help students build enterprise skills and understand how to have a positive impact through entrepreneurship.
Last year we reviewed the program to understand what it does well and what can be done better. Feedback collected from surveys and co-design sessions with teachers and students provided insights that we’ve used to improve the toolkit.
We’re excited to present the updated toolkit ready for delivery. We’re committed to continuous improvement which is why we’re giving you the opportunity to try out the new content and provide feedback.
Updated learner journey
The toolkit includes a brand new learner journey that’s organised into phases, which are designed to promote critical and creative thinking. Within the Problem Space learners identify the problem they are aiming to solve through their social enterprises and the positive impact they are seeking to have in their local communities. The Solution Space is where learners design, prototype and test their innovative product or service ideas, in readiness for business trading.
A renewed focus on enterprise skills
Enterprise skills are addressed more explicitly throughout the updated learning experience. Enterprise skills are:
Focus on financial capability
Financial capability learning is embedded across the phases of the program. Lesson design addresses social and emotional aspects of financial decision-making in conjunction with knowledge and understanding of financial concepts.
Enhanced experiential learning
The 2019 program includes enhanced experiential learning. In the“Immersion” phase learners:
Enterprise Skills Passport
Developed by FYA, in partnership with YLab, the enterprise skills passport is a resource that students can use to record when and how they have developed specific enterprise skills throughout the $20 Boss program.
Enterprise Skills Posters
FYA has designed a suite of 13 posters to help students understand what enterprise skills are. The posters use a Y-chart to model (“looks like, sounds like, feels like”) to demonstrate aspects of the skills in action.
The updated $20 Boss program content is mapped to Australian Curriculum at a lesson-by-lesson level for years 5-10. Mapped areas of the curriculum include:
