Classroom to Community

“How can a classroom become a vibrant learning community, where new knowledge is created and shared by making connections with the world outside the school?”

c2cYoung people in our schools today need to be flexible problem solvers with diverse skills and the ability to constantly learn and adapt to an ever-changing working environment. To engage young learners in an education that will prepare them for this evolving world, Education Foundation, a division of FYA, has launched Classroom to Community (C2C), a professional learning program for Victorian secondary schools. This program combines the success of our Cityscape program with FYA’s research into the benefits of community involvement in education.

The program applies the following concepts in action:

  • Authentic experiences
  • Formative assessment
  • Student-centred learning
  • Inquiry-based pedagogy using ‘teacher as mentor’ philosophy
  • Action research
  • Experiential learning
  • Positive Psychology principles in facilitation and relationships

C2C aims to empower schools to take on their own student-led, community-based learning programs, by creating a model in Year 9, which will ultimately enhance other areas of the school by extending elements of Classroom to Community into the broader school community.

The program aims to do this by:

  • Working within the school to model, team teach and facilitate a successful active learning program;
  • Acknowledging each school’s unique situation, responding to their particular needs, and actively working with teachers and curriculum leaders to develop the school’s own active community learning model;
  • Providing access to broader support from FYA and our networks, in building and sustaining community partnerships.
