Radio training and opportunities for same sex attracted young people
Gay and lesbian people are both under-represented and misrepresented in the media. Generation Next is a radio training program that is open to same sex attracted young people aged 16-25 years. It is run at JOY 94.9, a gay and lesbian community radio station in Melbourne. Approximately 80 young people have participated in training courses over the past five years. The program works to:
- Provide opportunities for young people to play an integral role in the development and direction of JOY 94.9;
- Increase information and development of community linkages for same sex attracted young people;
- Provide young people with the opportunity to gain new skills and experience in a radio broadcasting environment;
- Provide information to young people on a wide range of issues related to sexuality and general youth issues and interests; and Have a positive impact on the lives of same sex attracted young people by providing opportunities for meaningful participation and connection to their community.
Generation Next is free, nationally recognised and offers a Certificate III in Broadcasting to a group of same sex attracted young people (SSAYP) each year. It is administered by a youth steering committee.
“It’s really great to find this new avenue for expression. And while it’s not a big deal being around other gay people, it’s nice. As result of my on-air experience, I came out to my Dad … My family is happy for me … [my] friends love listening to me on radio. I have a lot of straight friends who listen in and want to become members of JOY”. – Generation Next participant.
